Z - Zappai

A Japanese form, you may see Zappai referred to as "pseudo-haiku," and while it does have the 5/7/5 syllable pattern, a zappai never contains any seasonal or nature references.  You could say it's a senryu then, but senryu relate to human nature, in a ironic or humorous way, and a senryu doesn't have the strict adherence to the 5/7/5.   Haiku societies are quick to dismiss the zappai as being "doggeral verse" with  little literary value.

Some call it pseudo-

Haiku, although it has no

Seasonal reference.

  1. LOL :D It's strange to define a poetic form by something it does *not* contain. Fun!
This was a fascinating theme, thank you!

    1. It does seem a backwards way of doing it. Thank you for your visits and comments.

  5. Hi Lisa - I really enjoyed your poetry forms posts and have just shared it with my budding poet grandson. Just a request or suggestion, could you please put a list of links to all 26 posts in your Reflections post, its quite difficult to navigate to them...
