X - Xenophanic

Xenophanic

I didn't do X as a poetry from, since the only X form I found was invented solely for the purpose of having a poetry form that starts with X, and I just didn't want to resort to that.  Xenophanic refers to the itinerant poets in ancient Greece who used satire and wit. The term comes from the name of the wandering Greek poet and philosopher, Xenophanes, who lived around 550 BCE.

One of the phrases he was known for was, "If cows and horses had hands and could draw, cows would draw gods that resemble cows and horses would draw gods that resemble horses."   I wrote two American Sentences based on that thought, that gods are created in the image of the created, not vice versa.

Knowing little of divine beings, man makes gods in his own image.

Man makes gods in his own image, leaving woman out, as usual.

  2. Well done on managing to link 'X' in for the A-Z. Time for a re-design on our image of God?

    1. X was quite a problem! As I wrote, it didn't seem right to use a form invented just to have an X form. Maybe we could make up our own Xs next year for whatever our themes are! A new X word.

  3. Good X, and good observations. When my kids were little I explained to them that God wasn't really male or female, so they could use what pronouns they wanted. My son picked "he", and my daughter picked "she"; more evidence that we want a god who seems like us in at least some way.

    1. You handled that nicely! I remember arguing with my friend when I was little. Her family went to church, mine didn't. I was insisting god wasn't "real" and she said he was. My mother told me that Jesus had lived as a real person, but god hadn't. That was good enough for me, and I felt like I'd "won!"

  4. Ha, that second one is hilarious! #HeForShe

I love letter X posts! Always such variety.
It's hard to believe the alphabet part of the blogging challenge is over for 2021. Down to the after survey, reflections, and the "road trip" sign-up.
Plus, I'm taking part in the Bout of Books read-a-thon in May. So much excitement!

    1. That's true, X is a hard one, so people get creative. Oh, read-a-thons can be fun! I love reading, it's one of my few passions. I have my Goodreads goal, and am a bit behind since I can't browse the library shelves. Thanks for the A to Z!
