Gone and Long Forgotten

Crumbling tombstones of the long deceased are topped by markers bearing the words,
"GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN."
Weathered by time, the names and dates are unreadable.

Old albums, once a family’s pride, brought out to share with each visitor, now hold tattered, faded photos of stiff figures in awkward poses.  Thinking they’d always be remembered, no one thought to write names on the photo’s backs.  Nameless ancestors, gone and forgotten.

Childhood places too.  Remember when… a game we play.  “Remember the Doggie Diner? It was right there…”  I guess I’m the only one left.

Gone too long and long forgotten.

    1. Thank you. I thought about the photo albums my mother threw out after her mother died. She didn't know who any of the people in them were. She was not a sentimental person! My brother saw the albums in the trash and took them. He is sentimental, but he also does genealogy, so may have figured things out.

  3. So true how these memories morph over time and yes one day the names will be forgotten :( When I was young with grandma and with mom, we'd regularly do through the pictures and rehash who they were and how they fit in the family. That has ended and my kids will have no roots to remember. With the digital age the day of hard copy photos may end as well.

    1. It might not bother them though. Maybe the importance of "roots" isn't a younger generation thing for most. I think of all the photos "trapped" on computers quite often. I used to print some out, but am so many years behind I can't do it now, or afford to.
