S - Sea Glass

SEA GLASS

scanning the sand
the pebbly line
where tide meets land
you find a colorful gem
among the broken pieces of shell
       and crab claws

worn by the sea
and frosted by time
40 or 50
even 100 years
in the making

You stoop to pick it up
with sandy fingers
a vibrant jewel in your palm
the ocean’s gift
to those who look down

    1. Thank you. I love collecting it too. I am especially thrilled when I find the blue, even teeny pieces! Most of mine is from the Northern California coast, but I have some set apart from a Puerto Rican vacation.

    1. I've read that it's getting rarer since less is made from glass these days.

  4. Most of the sea glass I encountered in and around Lake Michigan was actual glass from beer bottles thrown in by drunken teenagers... Great poem!

    1. Then you had beach glass. I didn't know there was a difference between sea glass and beach glass until recently. Sea glass is from salt water, and it's frosted more, beach glass is from fresh water.
Sounds dangerous to wade barefoot in the lake!

  5. Lisa,

Man-made recreated by nature...."Worn by the sea frosted by time". Great line! Seaglass is fascinating! I have a blog buddy who makes jewelry out of seaglass who also happens to have the same name as you. You're not the same are ya? :) In case you're interesed, her blog is Handmade Jewelry Haven. I know she has an Esty shop, too. :)

Thanks for joining me yesterday for A2Z Little Mermaid art sketch 'Sebastian & Scuttle'!

    1. Isn't it? And it sinks, so marine animals don't swallow it thinking it's food!
