"Shut the Damn Screen Door!"

Weekly Writing Prompt (prompt words in red) from

old screen door

It was only almost open,

or I guess you could say it was almost closed,

but to listen to her you’d expect

to see a gaping screen door,

hanging by its hinges,

“trashing up the neighborhood,”

as she was wont to say

in one of the mean ways I grew to know

from her night-drunk moods

too easy to define as part of my family history,

that of “trashing up the neighborhood,”

which will be my parting shot

as I walk out that door the last time,

leaving it open.

  1. Well the screen door was the final straw I am afraid! The split had come some time by the sound of it. Good tale.

    1. That's what I thought, the narrator was just waiting to either come of age to leave, or save up the money to go. I don't expect he or she will be back to visit soon!
