24 Seasons: Shubun (Autumn Equinox) No. 1
Tanka Tuesday 24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge No. 1
The Autumn Equinox (September 22 – October 7) Shubun 秋分
"You must use one kigo word or phrase in your poem. Please add your kigo word or phrase on your post... You can create a poem from the 24 forms listed."
I chose to use a kigo phrase from the resource found here, https://worldkigodatabase.blogspot.com, first rains. This resource is very helpful; I learned that rain itself is not a kigo. The first rain of the season happened just yesterday, after a long hot, dry summer in southern Oregon. The photos accompanying the haiku sequence were taken this morning.
right on time
first rains usher forth
winged termites
first rains bead
to flow down petal
revive rose
petals gleam
bejeweled by the
first soft rains
dampwood winged termites (alates) swarming

I love flowers the day after a rain. Nice capture.
ReplyDeleteSo do I! Lupine leaves always have a little star drop in their centers.
DeleteThanks for the clarification on the rain needing a modifier to be used as a kigo. Really enjoying your rose images.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was interesting to see just rain won't do!
DeleteLisa, your photos are stunning! These kigo words are so descriptive! There are a few like this (first rain). Did it say this was an autumn kigo or a spring kigo? I hoped to work within the season we're all in. 🧡
ReplyDeleteIt didn't give a specific season in the two haiku shown using "first rains." It read to me as autumn, with a leaking roof after the first rain, since I pictured winter coming and they'd better fix that! It was my first rain since spring, we didn't have any summer rain. There is a reference to the "first rain" (singular) in late summer, but it isn't used as a kigo, just explaining what "beneficial rain" is as a kigo. I didn't check other sources for "first rains" so maybe it is a spring kigo?
DeleteThinking on it, I can't see it as spring, at least here. It would have been raining all winter, so "first" wouldn't apply.
DeleteDew is very like jewels.
ReplyDeleteSo true!
DeleteWonderful poem. I live in Oregon too where "First Rain" is a real and notable autumn event. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I moved here from CA people would say, "You must really love the rain!" No, not all of Oregon is rainy like they think.
DeleteBeautiful poem, Lisa! I love your photos of the roses with raindrops! I live in Oregon also. We had pouring rain today.
