N - Nonce: Nativity
A Nonce form is a poem created by an individual poet, usually for one-time use. Depending on the poet's preference, it may be based on a pre-existing form, but will have its own structure. So, basically, a nonce is a form for one-time use.
I wrote nine stanzas, two rhyming lines each, with nine syllables in each line, so a lot of Ns.
Nativity is my name for this diptych (an artwork in two connected parts), a term from Greek meaning "pair of writing tablets." I found it in the Goodwill Outlet bins, and it's one of my favorite pieces. The artist is Marlinde von Ruhs, which is rather incredible to find! The two parts are hinged, trimmed in gold braid, with the backs covered in turquoise felt with beading. It's the most incredible nativity I've ever seen!
wrought with expert creativity!
Consider the beasts in attendance,
their colors and forms in resplendence.
A donkey of blue smiles so sweetly,
sheep and ox look on more discreetly.
The quartet expected takes quite a twist,
a creature some deny does exist.
A unicorn with spots on his back,
a tail of white, and mane of coal black.
This is a scene I never would think
would come to my mind without strong drink!
A white dove descends like naught is odd,
while angels declare, "Glory to God."
Wrapped up in felt, with braiding of gold,
open it up and wonders unfold.
Truly a treasure, salvaged from chaff,
now it's all mine, I can only laugh!
